ABOUT KEYSTONE COUNTS

The Coalition for Racial Equity in Political Maps

The Commonwealth’s demographics are changing. Communities of color are the fastest growing segment of Pennsylvania’s population, This growth is happening in nearly all Pennsylvania counties, and it is especially rapid in areas where communities of color have longstanding roots. Unfortunately, this widespread diversity is not reflected in the General Assembly, in our congressional delegation, or at the county or municipal level across much of the state.

MAPS AREN’T FAIR WITHOUT RACIAL EQUITY

Who Gets to Have Power in Pennsylvania?

Both parties have been complicit in drawing voting districts that disadvantage Pennsylvania’s communities of color, especially in the Legislature.. We need to see maps that uphold the democratic ideal of “one person, one vote” – maps that have been drawn with racial equity as a core value.

FACT CHECK:
Although people of color make up 27.5% of Pennsylvania’s total population, as of 2018 its highest law making body – the state Legislature – was 89% white.

CENSUS DATA DRIVES MAPS

Which Communities Might Be Left Behind?

We fought hard to ensure that all Pennsylvanians, especially traditionally underrepresented communities, were counted in the Census. Now we have to fight to ensure that they get the representation they deserve in the legislature.
